How chronic exposure to tiny levels of carbon monoxide damages hearing in young ears

UCLA scientists first to identify mechanism

FINDINGS: UCLA scientists have discovered how chronic exposure to low levels of carbon monoxide [C O] damages the inner ear, resulting in permanent hearing loss. At the Ca/OSHA's exposure limit of 0.0025 percent -- or 25 parts per million CO in the air -- the gas creates oxidative stress, a condition that damages the cochlear cells, leading to impairment of the auditory nerves.

CONTEXT: Tobacco smoke, gas heaters, stoves and ovens all emit C O, which can rise to high concentrations in poorly ventilated homes. Infants and children are particularly vulnerable to C O exposure because they spend a great deal of time in the home. NO policies exist to mandate regulation of C O in the home.

IMPACT: This is the first time that inhaled C O has been linked to oxidative stress, a KNOWN RISK FACTOR IN MANY DISORDERS, including Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, Multi Sclerosis, Lou Gherig's Disease and Cardiovascular Disease. Tobacco smoke, which contains C O, also aggravates many of these diseases. The UCLA findings highlight the need for policy makers to reexamine the regulation of C O due to car exhaust, tobacco smoke, smog, and heating and cooking appliances; as well as any and all sources of carbon monoxide.

A Kidde-Nighthawk Model #KN-COPP-3 says:

"Pregnant women, infants, children, senior citizens, persons with heart or respiratory problems and smokers may experience symptoms at lower levels of exposure than noted. Individuals with medical problems may consider using warning devices which provide audible and visual signals for carbon monoxide concentrations under 30 ppm."

The DICON / American Sensors Model 850E adds the words "using more sensitive detection devices which provides audible and visual signals for concentrations under 30 ppm."

The UNIVERSAL MODEL CD-9000 Warns: "Individuals with medical conditions may consider using warning devices which provide audible and visual signals for carbon monoxide concentrations under 30 ppm."

ALL other UL Listed C O alarms carry similar WARNINGS.

Chronic Low Level C O Poisoning is being totally ignored by MOST of the Home Builders, HVAC Contractors & Home Inspectors who are still installing only UL Listed C O alarms, and are failing to add the NEEDED Low Level C O PROTECTION which could be provided by the C O - Experts Low Level C O "Health" Monitor.

The airtight envelopes being created by our Nation's Super Insulated, "Energy Efficiency Programs" are turning these homes into CHRONIC LOW LEVEL C O POISONING BREEDING GROUNDS.

Because UL / CSA Listed C O alarm manufacturers DO STATE VERY CLEARLY on their packaging, on their C O alarms, and in their Owner's Manuals, that their C O alarms DO NOT provide the level of protection needed, the Total Liability falls directly upon the Contractor.

Most Consumers DO NOT KNOW about Chronic Low Level C O Poisoning; however, as a Professional, YOU are "Expected" to KNOW, and to provide the proper and necessary Professional Service and Protection.

Actual Cases:

a. Recently, I was contacted by a HVAC "Radiant Heating" Contractor from the Springfield, Missouri Area that had just been informed that he was being SUED for 2.5 Million Dollars because he had "Installed a New Water Flow Control Valve in the Radiant Floor Heating System years prior to a C O Poisoning incident that had KILLED 2 ELDERLY Occupants. That valve installation was the ONLY Service he had EVER provided in the home. A Service that in NO WAY could have effected the production or control of any combustion, or the production of C O within the home.

If you have EVER been in the home, YOU WILL PROBABLY BE NAMED IN THE LAWSUIT.
